Being a student is an abusive relationship. You pay someone more money than you really have, and for what? To be sitting up at 5 am writing a paper on chinese astronomy, dressed for the day already because you have to get going at 7 am? haha. It just seems wrong. Look me in the face and tell me I'll ever need to know about Chinese astronomy again... I doubt it's possible.

haha. 3 days. It's all good really, just wanted to rant a little. I really don't mind being a student, I think all night essay writing is somehow an essential part of your 20's.

Found this quote, which is entirely unrelated to this post, but I enjoy, and it is too long to post anywhere else, haha:

Find good guys. Don't find guys who have a stack of mags on top of their toilet, and watch Spike TV....If your boyfriend watches more than, like, 20 minutes of cop car chases, cut it out. And let me tell you one other secret, ladies. If he is wearing a hat, like, a baseball cap, that baseball cap must be perfectly straight on his head. If that hat is even just one degree off this way or that way, it's actually relative to how much of a dick he is. So if he's totally that way, that's how much of a dick he is. And if his hat is all the way sideways, ruuuuuun! Stay in line with the hat. And if it's on backwards, he may want to arm wrestle.

I was handed a business card today on the street. Usually I would just discard it and not think about it again, but this one has consumed my mind. I just keep reading it.
Whatever, I'm sick of school, let's waste some time:

1. Alright, so have you ever actually sat down and thought about why you like the person you like?
no, I just know I like them. That's all I need to know.

2. When people say, "Honestly, I don't think I've ever talked shit about anyone" do you think its possible? no, but not many people attempt to say that, haha.

3. How do you feel about gay marriage?
Do it. Then adopt a kid and raise them so there will be one less person in the world who questions the idea of gay marriage. Seriously, I'm so on board with gay marriage. I think anyone who actually wants to attempt to be married should be allowed.

4. Is there someone you'd really like to hang out with and just talk about stuff?
Honestly, and this may be the obscene amount of CBC I have been watching, but I want to get Jian Ghomeshi and George Stroumboulopoulos in a room and talk music

5. Is there something that has happened in your past that you really hate talking about?
not really, I'm emotionally stunted, so I'll answer any personal question with general disregard for their significance.

6. Do you think a lot of people think bad things about you?
I think I'm generally liked.... I think

7. Give me a random lyric from the song you're listening to:
"find a way to smile and never let it get away"

8. Do you think you're approachable?
people ask me directions on the street, so I think so. haha.

10. Do you regret doing anything this week?
no, but it's only Tuesday

11. Name something you wouldn't want to buy that's been used.
underwear

12. When did you last cry?
when my dog died

13. How late did you stay up last nite?
2 am like always, I'm on the most messed up sleep schedule

14. Has someone of the opposite sex ever told you they loved you?
Yes

15. What do you think of the most when you are alone?
stupid stuff like clothes and music, then stuff like dream jobs

16. Suppose you see your crush kissing someone else? I expect to see my crush kissing someone else considering his relationship status, haha

17. What would you do if a teacher of the opposite sex hit on you? depends which, I have a few cute ones, haha

18. Would you ever become a vegetarian or even vegan? I wouldn't be a vegan, because that's insanity and I love milk, but other than chicken I don't eat meat anyways, so I don't think being a vegetarian would be hard for me

19. Do you like your school?
i'm kind of over the idea of it right now

20. What do you think of people who hate vegetarians?
damn, did a vegetarian make this survey or something? Whatever, I think people who hate vegetarians should get a hobby

21. Are you a flirt?
I'm a 2 year old as a flirt. AWFUL.

22.Would you rather have jet black hair or cherry red hair?
Cherry Red

23. Do you make sexual innuendos about everything?
No. It'd be weird coming from me

25. What song are you listening to?
"Don't know why and Your body is a wonderland" by Norah Jones and John Mayer at the Big in 2002 award... I just downloaded it, so this is a first listen. 6 years late.

26. Have you ever held hands?
Yes

27.When was the last time that you went swimming, where and with who?
woah, umm, I'm going to assume at Katies, I'll say August some time.

28. If you need a new pair of jeans, what store do you go to first?
old navy, because I think all jeans look relatively the same so I dont want to spend 100 dollars on them

30. Does talking about sex make you uncomfortable?
depends who with

32.
I have 2 graduations to go to at the beginning of this summer, so I thought, I need a dress.

Well, I was out with a friend a few weeks back, found a dress I love (a bit more expensive than I wanted, but I loved), so I bought it.

Just under a week later, I'm on perezhilton.com and see this:

Miley Cyrus stole my dress! Not my fault I live in Canada, haha. I can't be out wearing dresses yet.

Anyways, I thought it was pretty funny. Good taste, Miley.

How do you feel about racism?
I agree with Hayley as much as I always used to think it was a pretty simple thing, but there are SO many forms of it. Coming from my middle class suburban white experience I still don't think I have a full grasp on how pervasive it is, but I'm trying.

6. How do you feel about global warming?
I'm worried about it, and worried for those who don't think it is happening. However, I think my ecological footprint is a tiny as 1 person can make short or living in the woods, so that makes me feel better.

7. How do you feel about recycling?
we're all about it in my apartment. We do weekly runs down to the recycling bins with our stuff

8. Can you cook?
god. no

9. Do you own a bible?
yeah, I got one when I was like 8, it's around somewhere, haha

10. What are the best things in life?
happiness family friends money (I hate to involve money, but if you have it you have time to be happy, if you don't you're too stressed out.)

11. Look outside, how's the weather?
Kinda dreary but no rain or snow or anything

12. what kind of vehicle do you drive?
2 feet, haha.

13. One place you would love to visit?
England, New York City, Rome, Greece. Where WOULDN'T I like to visit, haha.

17. what is your favorite holiday?
christmas

18. what is you favorite color?
purple

19. who is your best friend and why?
Krista, because we met when we were 3 and lived close to each other, and when you're that young that's all the reason you need, haha.

20. what two characterisitics best describe you?
giggly and loud

21. finish this sentance: "Children need...."
hope

22. Have you been happy recently?.
yes

23. do you like getting flowers?
I think they're pretty and I say awww like a girl should, but fresh cut ones die, and that's slightly depressing to watch, and lets face it, plants die on me too, so I can think of better presents

24. who do you shop for most?
me!

25. You know, enjoy the nice weather and get in shape. GOOD LORD ARE BIKES HARDER TO RIDE THAN I REMEMBER. DAMN. It just reminded us we were out of shape more than it was fun like I remember it used to be.

30. Is lying ever acceptable?
oooh yeah.

31. What was the last movie you watched?
Drillbit Taylor. I love Owen Wilson, and more than that I LOVE Judd Apatow, the director, but, it's not a good movie.

32. That's depressing, yes?

34. what is your favorite TV show?
i don't have cable, but I actively search out methods to watch "Grey's Anatomy" and, don't judge me, "The Hills." Was today a good day?
again, been up half an hour. But I'm optimistic.

37. what is something you are excited for?
this semester to be done

38. Literally. People will say things to me, and I will more likely than not find a song line that applies, haha. I wont always sing it out loud, but I'll for sure be singing it in my head. This ailment is the worst around my sister.

45. what is the most important trait in a friend?
someone I can carry on a conversation with

46. I say crap alot. I don't actually swear. I don't have any moral issue with swearing, but it just doesn't sound right when I do it. You know that high pitched squeaky voice Conan O'Brien makes when he's making fun of himself for being nerdy? That's me when I try and swear.

48. what are you doing today?
class, essay, coffee, essay

49. I have to be back in Toronto in September, which means there is an end date on this moving, which is the only way I would (currently) move far. I'm also feeling slightly stir crazy, maybe from the 4 years at this 1 school, 3 years at this 1 apartment. I have no job I'm attached to, nobody that can't live without me for 4 months. I do have a butt that's only seen 1 plane and eyes that have only ever seen Ontario (mostly).

I cant move somewhere without getting a job in that place first. So that's the only hitch in this plan. I have picked the city though, and the furnished place to live in that city. I just need to find a job. I think this is an inspired plan.

Give me something to miss. I've never been away from my closest family for more than MAYBE a month, ever. Take me away for 4 months= lots of love and appreciation for where I come from and who I come from.

Also, I could skip out on experiencing any more of my mothers current mid-life crisis.
Works out!

More details as/if this plays out.

I think I'm bordering on being an insomniac.

I have accomplished nothing this week and yet, have not been able to get to bed before 3 am on any of those days.

Not even much yawning. And I'll lay there in the dark, and nothing. Not before 3 am.

I think I'm coming down with something. Some 3 am disease. I hear that's going around.

More inefficient waste of a week. I have 3 essays due next week. I should write one. I did not.

I did read "The Picture of Dorian Gray" in 1 sitting for an essay I'm writing about the truth in it.. but, that's it. And that's mostly only because I had to take the subway for the first time in an eternity a rather lengthy distance and I don't do that without being equipped with reading material.

I go home tomorrow for Easter. It's my goal to re-find some normal sleeping habit and bring it back with me to Toronto.

I am excited about Easter. it should be eventful. Also, those of you I know should come to Kelly's Saturday night. I could invite you on Facebook or something, but this is efficient, as I feel considering you also post things you will read things. haha.

TEN WHATS:

1. What was the first thing you thought about when you woke up?
man I need to go to this class no matter how much I want to keep sleeping

2. What did you do last night?
went to school for a while, did no homework..

3. What is the most important part of your life right now?
convincing 5 English Professors, 1 History Professor and 1 Politics Professor that theirs is the class I have time to read for

4. What would you rather be doing right now?
I'm pretty set. I painted my nails for like... an hour. I'm now eating popcorn and thinking about an essay outline I want to show a Prof on Monday. It's boring, but there are worse things to be doing with my time

5. What did you last cry over?
I don't cry. I'm dead inside.

6. What always makes you feel better when you're upset?
spending money (always problematic), going for a walk

7. What are your plans tomorrow?
some homework (maybe), and st. patricks day stuff

8. What's the most important thing you look for in a significant other?
A sense of humour. (Other than the superficial answer of good teeth, hah)

9. What are you worried about?
how much time you got? I'm a wrinkled 21 year old

10. What are you looking forward to most in this week?
Friday- home for Easter weekend

NINE HAVE-YOU-EVERS:

1. Have you ever liked someone with a girlfriend/boyfriend?
who hasn't

2. Have you ever had your heart broken?
no

3. Have you ever played a sport on a team?
EVER? Yes. Since I reached 2 digits in age? No.

4.Have you ever been out of the country?
No, I'm lame

5. Have you ever had major/minor surgery?
no

6. Have you ever been back stabbed by a friend?
literally? no. haha

7. Have you ever had the cops called on you?
At like a house party, yes. Oh, and when Katie had her car break down and we started using alcohol bottles to syphon gas into the car.. yeah, people didn't like that.

8. Have you ever dated someone younger then you?
no

9. Have you ever read an entire book in one day?
no, I have A.D.D.

EIGHT WHOS:

1. Who was the last person you saw?
Jackie, in the hall on the phone with her mom. I liked that she made her mom wait while she talked to me. haha.

2. Who was the last person you hugged?
Emily and or Smit

3. Who was the last person you called?
Emily

4. Who was the last person to call you?
Diana

5. Who was your first crush?
Ben Austin, grade 3 (?)

6. Who was the last person to message you online?
Kyle

7. Who is the last person you texted?
Diana.

8. Who did you last yell at?
umm, I'm not sure. No yelling, just harsh talking, haha

SEVEN WHENS:

1. When was your last shower?

2. When did you last see your mom?

3. When was your last hug?
We've been over this.

5. When was the last time you cried?
we've been over this too.

6. When did you last go to the movie theatre?
Forever ago. While I was home for reading week I went and saw Vantage Point. It was a hot date with Meagan, haha.

7. When were you born?
October 15th.

SIX WHERES:

1. Where do your best friend(s) live?
St. Catharines/Ottawa/Peterborough/Toronto.

2. Where did you last go?
school

3. Where did you last hang out?
kitchen.

4. Where do you go to school?
Ryerson.

5. Where is your favorite place to be?
my room. it's comfy

6. Where did you sleep last night?
Under 2 comforters. It was lovely

FIVE DO/DOES:

1. Do you like someone right now?
yes, against all smart thinking

2. Do they like you too?
heck no, I don't think so atleast. That would be bad

3. Do you ever wish you were someone else?
Sure. who doesn't sometimes

4. Do you know the muffin man?
we're tight

5. Does the future scare you?
yes, heck yes.

FOUR WHYS:

1. Why are you best friends with your best friends?
Because they're stellar happy fun times.

2. Why did you get a Facebook?
Because it's addictive...

3. Why did your parents give you the name you have?
Because my mom was into a soap opera with a Rachel, and grew up in a religious family. haha

4. Why are you doing this survey?
Wasting time.

THREE IFS:

1. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
to wake up and be showered/dressed/put together instantly. haha. Save so much time.

2. If you could go back in time and change one thing, would you?
yes. haha.

3. If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring one thing what would you bring and why?
a phone

TWO WOULD-YOU-EVERS:

1. Would you ever be friends with someone again, who you promised yourself you never would be, because they were so mean to you?
no.

2. Would you ever shave your head to save the person you love?
If it were life or death, yes.

ONE LAST QUESTION:

1. Are you happy with your life right now?
I know nothing else. haha.

I'm getting very into the Presidential race happening. Partially because it's good dramatic tv, but because it was so crazy hard to choose a favorite, and I don't remember ever thinking that before. haha. Last time, I definitely liked Kerry more. In 2000 I wanted Gore. This time though, I didn't even know who I wanted to be nominated to run for President- well, between Clinton and Obama of course. I mean, obviously I'm not team McCain. Anyways, after a day of CNN I decided on Obama, partially because I just like him more as a person, but also, and this is awful reasoning, but because I heard on CNN about a pole taken of independent voters. Basically if it were McCain vs. Clinton, independents would vote McCain but if it were McCain vs. Obama they'd vote Obama. This means McCain has a better shot against Clinton, and not to make Republican's sound like the anti-christ but I'm not willing to support anything or anyone who gives the Republican's a better shot at winning. Republican's even WANT Clinton to get the nomination so they can win. Anyways, I didn't come on to rant about politics, haha, I'm just listening to the "Yes we can" song and decided to reason my vote. You know, my ever so important not-able-to-vote-cuz-I'm-Canadian vote. haha.

"We've been warned against giving people of this nation false hope. But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about Hope."

I've watched an astronomical amount of Sex and the City on dvd in the past 3 days. I mean, I threw in some other stuff too, like going outside, etc. but seriously, a ton of it. It's an excellent show, but it kept me from studying and made me want to spend money on things I can't afford. Seriously, I had a nap today because I woke up at 8 on a Sunday like a shmuck, and my nap... was about me ordering 2 pairs of Manolo Blahnik's online. Seriously. I can remember what they looked like, haha. And I had them to delivered to me while I was at dinner at Rachel Niles house, which would usually be weird, but she's asked me out to dinner so many times in the past week it's not that surprising. Damn, if I was going to have 2 pairs of 500 dollar shoes delivered to me I'd make time for that dinner. My shoes now look like shit. I did find out I have 22 pairs at school, which I think may be a touch crazy, but damn, they're all crap compared to the dream shoes. Damn Sex and the City makes my student life look crappy. haha. I better have that much disposable income when I'm 33. Anyways, I have a midterm tomorrow morning and I somehow put off studying for it til like 7:00 tonight. I was up at 8 and didn't study for another 11 hours... impressive. I did read the Spring vogue and the Globe and Mail, which takes atleast 2 hours.

Here's the thing about me and Vogue.. My mom told me there was this news report about how women who can't cook buy gourmet cooking magazines, and it's like women porn, because they know they'll never actually cook these things, but they love to look at them. This is what I do with fashion magazines. I know I am too poor, not a size 2, and half the stuff would look crazy on any human being, but I still want to look. I may not buy cooking magazines and fantasize being able to cook the pretty looking food, but I definitely fantasize a wardrobe and wearing the pretty looking clothing. haha.

I'm so excited last week is over. I had 2 midterms, 3 essays and a short answer thing due. This coming week I have... a midterm. That's MUCH more manageable.

I keep procrastinating applying for jobs. I'm going to be unemployed and it'll suck. haha. I keep telling myself this but I keep not doing anything. I have a theory about me and my intense procrastination. I have no real drama, so I think I'm hardcore creating it for myself this year. I'm not consciously doing that, but I really do think that's what it must be. I mean, I had 3 days to study for this midterm, and I waited til... now. I wait til last minute to do pretty well everything, and I think it's 1 part laziness and 2 parts drama creation.

Anyways, must go back to studying. "Lives are like retractable pencils. If you push them too far they're going to break. And people are like paper dolls. Paper dolls and people, they're the very same shape." Haha, that's completely meaningless, but that's what was playing in my ear as I finished this post. haha, oh Flight of the Conchords.

Oh, my f*ing Ipod stopped working on me again yesterday. I swear to god, if i wasn't an IPod dependent I'd throw it off a bridge.

It's been a very long time since I've genuinely written something here. There have been plenty of 2 am quizzes and spouted song lyrics, but no actual updates of real posts. Let's fix that:

So, I don't want to sound all typical student, but I'm counting down the days until reading week, which, by the way, happens beginning Friday night. Until then I'm filling my time with class, homework, and currently, "between the beautifuls" by Hawksley Workman. Seriously, if you don't know him.... go. now. buy. love. I've seen him in concert once, saw him at the filming of MTV Live last Wednesday. I don't even watch that crap, but I showed up and brought Diana (who doesn't know Hawksley), just to see him play 3 songs (totally worth all the mindless cheering required with the filming of a tv show, and which we were forced to do.) I bought the cd today, and I'm having a religious experience right now. haha. I'm on "Pomegranate Daffodil" and am being chanted at to "don't fuck around anymore", and I really don't want to fuck around anymore. haha. I'm not even doing anything, but I want to be better. haha. Ok, that's all I'll say about that.

School is good. I hate to say I'm over it because I'm not really. I mean, I want it to be done, but know when it is and I have no school to return to in the fall I'll feel empty, hopeless and want to go back. So I'm trying to recognize my love of the school experience before it's gone. It's an attempt to fight the "by the time I recognize this moment, this moment will be gone" issue. I don't know if it's really possible to recognize how much I'll miss it when it's gone, but I'm trying to actively recognize it. Fighting the urge to be sick of it.

I decided not to apply to any grad school. This was the result of a lack of money, which directly correlates to my inability to shell out $75 a pop to send in an application. Also, I didn't apply out of simple lack of preparedness. I didn't have reference letters from Profs, and I didn't think I could get them in the time I left for myself. I think I may collect some by the end of this year just incase I decide in a year that I need school in my life to function. haha. I'll leave the option open for myself.

I am applying to some interesting jobs. Or, hopefully interesting. Copy editing, publishing companies, magazines, artistic community outreach programs, etc.

I'm in a weird limbo right now that is awkward. I am telling family (other than my mom) that I am still applying for grad school, because I don't want them to ask what I'm doing next, not have an answer for them, and be given the eye of pity, shame and awkward silence. The truth is I never knew specifically what I wanted to do with my life, but I never wanted to say it, and I guess I always hoped saying I was taking Arts and Contemporary Studies would make people just understand my lack of future plans. It did not, and now I'm getting questions.

I've decided with the end of University comes the need for a road trip or trip in general. I'm kinda loving the idea of a road trip complete with a Bob Dylan cd mix. haha. I think this has to be the summer for a trip. It's just what is required at this junction.

I went home and the big tree from our front yard was gone. Sadness. I mean, I knew it was coming. It was marked with a bullseye waiting for its impending death, but still, it's gone now. It was hollow and ancient, but it was pretty, and ancient. I think the ancient part works both to why it should go and why it should stay.

I bought a hat today for 5 dollars. Things like that make me endlessly and oddly happy.

That's it.... If you made it through you are both impressive and in need of something more effective to do with your time.

I have to go write a reaction paper now. As in avoidance of this assignment as I am, you should all read the book I have to write it about- "Snow" by Orhan Pamuk. Excellent.

"Rusty on the outside, shabby on the inside, Angels keep lighting my way."

I'm watching the CBC news, and they're talking about how despite the presence of 6 police officers, a man was tasered to be stopped from dangerously walking in the streets last night. Fine, do what you need to do, but then the Reporter said this, "the person is facing charges after punching a female officer repeatedly." NOW, obviously punching a police officer= not good. But why is the use of the word "female" necessary? If someone punched a male officer would the reporter say "a male officer"? I doubt it. And I'm not saying the man shouldn't be charged for what he did, or that they shouldn't have used the taser, but I'm wondering if using the "he was punching a female" line is being used to muster some support for the tasering more than just being reporting of information. I'm not some feminist or anything, because I grew up in a time when being a feminist is pretty well impossible, but I'm just saying, use of "female" in this case seems sketchy.

A little love and understanding through the words of Alastair McIntosh

So there's this song. It's called "Homage to Young Men" by Nizlopi and Alastair McIntosh. I love the lyrics/talking verses, so I'm posting them, because I both love Nizlopi, and I think the word fuckedupness is humorous. I know it's been an eternity since I've posted anything on here and I promise I will soon, but 'til then, here's Alastair:

I want to talk to the young men out there. It’s for the women too, but especially the men, cos it’s tough to be a young man in this world. You have to face so much heartbreak and loss. In love and career and life. It’s easy to forget the meaning and give up. To burn up or sell out to addictions, despair or greed. Easy to forget that life’s a journey with a beginning, a middle and an end. It’s about navigating the future, your future. It’s about learning to become a man who’s real, and able to love.

So let’s talk about the first stage of life. The departure, when your boat is pushed out on the river. Most of who you are is still your small self. The you your family has made you, your schooling and your friends. You’ve still not found your deep self, your Great Self, cos that’s what the journey’s for. So you set out, full of hope, but with a heavy load. All the baggage of your upbringing. All the love, yes, but the fuckedupness too. Maybe the absent father, or the smothering mother, or the cold indifference of those around you. It’s no wonder you’ve a rough ride coming. It’s gonna get tough and it’s got to. So you can find yourself. So you can become a real man.

And that’s when you hit the second stage of life. The initiation in the rapids and the storms. That’s when you find the pain of brokenheartedness. Love affairs that fail, failures in career and all your hopes for what the world might have been. Plenty young men founder grazed on such jagged rocks as these. Bruised and angry in a storm of violence towards self and others. But it doesn’t have to stay like that. No, my friends, not if you push on and open to the inner grace that will bring you courage. The courage to face reality as it is, without lies. The courage to know your wound but to insist on beauty and outgrow it. The courage to open your heart, to hold fast to truth, and to stand each step in your dignity.

And that’s the courage that brings your boat to the third stage of life. To see how your small self is held in a greater Self. And that you’re fit to be an elder in your community, able to share the gifts and the blessings. Able to support and inspire what gives life among your people. And to love your beloved; to love and be loved by the Beloved no less, my friends. Because we’re talking here of love in all its meanings. And you can only love with a deepening heart. And that is why you had to grow courage on this journey to the ocean. That’s what your battle wounds on the field of life were all about. That, my dear friends, is what qualifies you to be a man in your community. Capable of loving and able to be loved.
